Shmuel Schnitzer was born in Israel in 1949. From 1967 to 1970 he served in the Engineering Corps of the Israel Defense Forces. Schnitzer is a graduate of Law (LLB) from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and a lawyer by profession.
In 1972, he joined the family business M. Schnitzer & Co., which since its establishment in the 1950s has been one of the leading companies in diamond production and export, and he is currently a partner in the firm.
In 1975, he became a member of the Diamond Exchange and in 1988 he began his public activityas an Executive Committee member of the Manufacturers' Association.
Shmuel Schnitzer served as President of the Israel Diamond Exchange for six consecutive years between 1998 and 2004. With the conclusion of his term of office, he was awarded the title Lifelong President of the Israel Diamond Exchange. In addition, he was awarded the title Honorary President of the Israel Diamonds and Precious Stones Exchange.
From 2002 until 2006 he served as President of the World Federation of Diamond Bourses (WFDB) and upon his retirement was awarded the title Lifelong Honorary President of this institution.
In 2006, he was granted an award by the New York Diamond Exchange for his lifetime achievements.
Currently, Shmuel Schnitzer is the chairman of the Harry Oppenheimer Diamond Museum Directorate, a member of the Executive Committee of the International Diamond Manufacturers Association (and a past Vice President) and a representative of the Diamond Exchange in the Diamond Institute Directorate.
Schnitzer is a Vice-Chairman of the World Diamond Council (WDC) and a member of the Advisory Committee of the Shanghai Diamond Exchange since its inception.
Shmuel Schnitzer is a member of the Schnitzer Foundation for Research on Israeli Economy and Society at Bar Ilan University and of the International Board of the Shenkar College of Engineering and Design. He also serves as President and Chairman of the Beitar Shimshon Tel Aviv soccer team.
