India Posts 15% Drop Polished Exports in November

The Diwali festival led to a sharp decline in rough imports last month as most diamond plants closed down for several weeks.

According to the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), Indian exports of polished diamonds dropped by 15% on the year last month to $1.32 billion.

There was a similar plunge in volume terms, with a fall of 16% to 2.2 million carats.

Meanwhile, imports of polished slumped 72% on the year to $147 million, indicating the decline in demand on the past of Indian consumers.

Imports of rough goods also dropped sharply, plummeting 60% to $625 million as Indian manufacturers cut back on production.

The fall in rough imports was also a result of the Diwali holiday that started towards the end of October.
