It took craftsmen more than four months to polish the gem, which weighed in excess of four carats in its rough form.

Israeli diamond jewelry firm Leibish & Co. will display a 3.37-carat Fancy Intense Pinkish Purple VS2 diamond, called the Purple Orchid diamond in Hong Kong.

The diamond, mined in South Africa and with a $4 million price tag, will be unveiled at the September 15-19 Hong Kong Gems & Jewellery Fair.

“The cause of purple in diamonds remains a mystery, which only adds to the glamour and attractiveness of diamonds like these” said Leibish Polnauer, president of Leibish & Co.

“There is currently a huge demand for luxury items that are different and stand out, not something that everyone already has. There are very, very few diamonds on the market above three carats with purple as the main color, which is what makes this exquisite diamond so rare.”
