India's Exports of Polished Diamonds Jump 11%

India's polished diamond exports in September jumped 11 percent on the same month in 2012 to $1.685 billion, the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) reported.
For the April to September fiscal year so far, the sub-continent's polished diamond exports have soared 32 percent to $10.26 billion.

Meanwhile, rough diamond imports dropped 6.0 percent year on the year to $1.82 billion in August, but increased by 22.5 percent in April- September to $1.82 billion. The decline is a result of falling demand for rough due to high prices, declining polished prices and financial problems caused by the falling rupee against the US dollar which has made rough imports even more expensive.

Imports of polished goods jumped 118 percent to $606.4 million in September, and by 81.4 percent to $3.38 billion in the April to September period.

As for exports of rough diamonds, they fell 21.6 percent to $123.7 million, but for the April to September period soared 19.0 percent to $887.4 million.
